The evolution of mobile phones in recent years, and the way their capabilities stretch further than mere tools of communication, makes this a difficult question to answer. Nowadays, where more than half of all mobile phones in existence are fitted with cameras, the majority featuring internet access and a few even sporting integrated GPS systems, it appears the question of ‘which phone is the best’ has been usurped by ‘which phone has the best gadgetry?’. And following the trend which sees a move towards a mobile-mini-laptop amalgam is the Nokia N97, which is guaranteed to get gadgeteers weak at the finger tips.
The N97 is the latest in Nokia’s Nseries chain, succeeding its younger brother the N95 and surpassing it in ways that the original did to all other phones of its category at the time. The N97 is the embodiment of the Nokia trademark, mixing and matching their best proven hardware, software and internet services to great effect. This phone comes equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard and boasts a 3.5 inch widescreen touch display, giving users a choice of input- the touch screen has the advantage of quick response yet the keys are there as a useful reserve for users who find them a bit cumbersome at times. In terms of on-board memory the N97 dwarfs even its nearest rivals, its 32GB storage proving to be double that of any mobile device currently in existence.
With all this potential for music, games and videos, the N97 demands a hefty battery effort and this is a task Nokia believe they have achieved quite admirably, given the 37 hours of music and 4.5 hours of video they claim it can withstand. Never has the word ‘standard feature’ looked so out of place in than in describing the N97’s specification showpieces. Although we have come to take for granted features such as a camera, it should be noted that the N97 doesn’t skimp on that front either, as Nokia have fitted it with a 5 megapixel camera (with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and dual LED flash). Amongst its other features are a GPS, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, stereo Bluetooth and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Does it merit the mantle of ‘best mobile’? Quite possibly, but the question remains as to mobile what exactly?
You can find the Nokia N97 at the Vodafone mobile phone shop.
